Sharing YouTube videos is a great way to distribute information online. Video can be used to make a typically boring topic engaging, or make a difficult to explain concept accessible (especially to visual learners). It is simple to copy a URL from a YouTube video and email it to a friend, but did you know that it is just as easy to include videos in your own website? All you have to do is create a YouTube playlist with all the videos you want and embed the YouTube player on your site.

What is the difference between a YouTube playlist and YouTube player?

A playlist is simply the list of videos that you want to include. For a through explanation of the options available, take a look at this video from YouTube’s help videos.

Once you have a playlist that you would like to share, you can share a link to the entire playlist, (just as you can with a single videos). Better yet, you can create a YouTube player and embed it on your own web page or blog post:

This player has been told to play all of the content in a particular playlist, so any changes to that playlist will also affect the player software that allows video to be streamed over the Internet.

How can I use a custom video player for sharing home tours, screen capture videos, and video testimonials?

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Mouse over your account name (top right).
  3. Select ‘Account’.
  4. Select ‘Custom Video Player’.
  5. Choose your desired customizations  (size, color, etc).
  6. Paste the provided embed code into your blog/website.

Here are some more differences between players and playlists that will help you understand the concept:

  • There are two different types of custom video players: a single frame video that plays videos from playlist or nine frame video player that contains the main video on the left and eight smaller videos to the right from one playlist.
  • A playlist can play videos in a custom video player embedded into a website.
  • A custom video player plays videos from one playlist.
  • A playlist can be embedded into a website that uses a single frame video.
  • A custom video player can be embedded into a website.
  • A playlist does not need a custom video player to be embedded into a website if you choose the single video frame.  You do need a playlist to embed a custom video player.

Here are some other important YouTube facts:

  • The single frame custom video player will play all the videos in the order of the playlist selected.  After the first video finishes the second video begins, and then the third and so on.  A viewer can skip over videos by selecting the icon on the bottom right hand side of the custom video player and browsing through the selection.  This video player that is similar to any other single video however the single frame video player only plays the videos within the playlist you select, not other related videos from other YouTube users.
  • The nine frame custom video player will play all the videos in the order of the playlist selected.  After the first video finishes and then the second begins and then the third and so on.  The advantage is that you can quickly see the first nine videos in the playlist for a better visual.  The disadvantage is that the video players are much larger than the single frame video so your website or blog must have enough space for it to play.
  • The maximum number of videos you can add to a playlist is 200.
  • The maximum number of videos that can play in a custom video player is 50.
  • The maximum length of a YouTube video is 10 minutes.
  • There is an unlimited number of videos you can upload to YouTube.
  • As far as I know you can upload as many videos as you like.  Some channels have thousands of videos.

Bonus Tip:  Share a link to full-screen video.

If you would like to share a YouTube video but don’t want to take the time to embed it, consider this tip:

When you copy the embed code, there is a link within the code that they give you:

<object width=”560″ height=”340″><param name=”movie” value=”http://www.youtube.com/v/y8VpktaIvD4&hl=en_US&fs=1&”></param><param name=”allowFullScreen” value=”true”></param><param name=”allowscriptaccess” value=”always”></param><embed src=”http://www.youtube.com/v/y8VpktaIvD4&hl=en_US&fs=1&” type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” allowscriptaccess=”always” allowfullscreen=”true” width=”560″ height=”340″></embed></object>

Instead of the typical YouTube page, your video now fills the entire screen. This is great for when you are trying to get the viewer to focus on your content, not the related videos.

Homework: Start to share this type of link in your email marketing campaign, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media forms of communication.
