Your brain has so much information about how to sell, manage, and communicate in the real estate practice. Why are YOU being so selfish, keeping information to yourself?

Take your brain and share it online! Social media sites are rapidly overtaking email as many computer users’ preferred method of communication and this can be a great way to build your reputation as a trusted expert.

Whether an educator yourself or a sales professional seeking new ways to prospect you can build your online brand using “Education-Based Marketing”.

Instead of being a resource that is only useful to those considering your services, offer information that that does not promote you but promotes the product of your product.  In other words, consumers are looking for information, things to avoid, and steps in the process specific to an area of expertise.

Your PowerPoint presentations, screen shot pictures, handouts, surveys, and other intellectual property benefit whom on your desktop computer.  They benefit individuals who are YOU-directed to your content instead of SELF-directed.

Learners absorb information faster when it is formatted to their own learning style.  In other words they receive your message more effectively according to their own audio, visual, or interactive predilection.  Furthermore, busy schedules do not permit for consistent synchronous learning express simply learning at the same time the instructor is present.  This is why it is essential for educators to learn how to implement multiple forms of asynchronous learning to benefit learners based on their own preferred method of learning and communication.

I would like to share some tips on how you can incorporate these learning styles into your social media program. First, let me share some uncommon terms that will be useful in forming a holistic action plan:

Synchronous = Learning at the same time.  Most adults are comfortable with synchronous learning environments because this is how they have traditionally sat through live seminars and workshops to hear the speaker present and ask questions based on the information presented.  Webinars are also a form of synchronous learning since you must attend at the same time as the instructor presents the material.

Social media tip

Promote live events using Linkedin events, Facebook events, Tweet ups.

Asynchronous = Learning in your pajamas.  You do not have to be physically present to learn. It takes a committed learner who’s education benefits of professional development and self-actualization are a priority.  Example of asynchronous environments include distance education, audio downloads to iPod, study guides, and online PowerPoint presentations.  Recorded Webinar videos are a form of asynchronous learning because people must watch the video of the webinar after it has been recorded.

Social media tip

Turn live presentations into digital downloads so that asynchronous learners can review on their own time..  Each piece of content including video, audio, PowerPoint, handout can be made into its own URL which can be shared in social media status updates.  This turns you from a live presenter into a 24/7 presenter who can impact more people in less time.

Auditory LearnersThe Secret-Surprise prefer to listen to the speaker live or a recorded version of the presentation.  If the speaker does not use clear, organized language then the auditory learner will have a tough time understanding advanced subjects.  Educators should consistently record their own presentations to listen for language that is unclear, incomplete, or otherwise improvable.  Use this as an opportunity to rehearse your material for next time.

Social media tip

Focus on your re-listenability. How can you make your presentations so good that people will want to listen to them over and over?  Stream your presentations live over the internet using www.Ustream.tv.  This site allows you to produce your own live streaming TV show that others can watch, more importantly record the video for future playback to listen for ums, ahs, and ambiguous phrases.

Visual Learners Business Man with Binoculars prefer PowerPoint presentations, videos, comprehensive handouts, charts, diagrams, and pictures that correspond to the point being made by the presenter.  Multiple skill sets are needed to produce multiple file formats.

Social media tip

Research YouTube and SlideShare to see examples of produced videos and PowerPoint presentations developed by other presenters.  Ask yourself along with your tech person the question how did they make this?  Craft your own message and use YouTube to create video demonstrations, role playing, and live events.  Share your existing PowerPoint presentations on www.SlideShare.net

Kinesthetic Learners mountainclimber prefer interaction, discussion, activities, and role playing.

Social media tip

Develop a Facebook Fan page for your school where students can discuss hot topics.  Create a Twitter hashtag that students can ask questions during the session so that the instructor can respond to during the class, break, or following the session.

Learning style sets

Audio + Synchronous = These traditional learners tend to retain more information from a live classroom setting or a webinar.  They like the ability to ask questions and ask the presenter to repeat what was said.  Educators should make sure that they outline course objectives, main ideas, and discuss bullet points in a logical format since the audio + synchronous learner relies on the spoken word.  Statistics, stories, and studies should contain concise language that they can write down to process in their minds.

Audio + Asynchronous professionals may have very busy schedules but can continuously develop their mind using audio CDs to be played in the car, download CDs to their mp3 player, and subscribing to podcasts.  The real difference between the asynchronous vs synchronous audio learner is that the asynchronous can re-listen to programs over and over on their own time.  Instructors should have salable products including CDs, internet audio downloads, and podcasts to appeal to these on-the-go professionals.

Visual + Synchronous are students who thrive in detailed PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and diagrams in a classroom or webinar style format.  They love to watch videos during presentations and appreciate the pictures that match the meanings behind the words that are spoken.  Instructors should spend time to research relevant royalty free photos (they have the rights to use) and insert one picture for each slide on their PowerPoint presentation.  This helps classroom and webinar learners to see the picture first and then hear the message behind what is being said for faster retention.  Furthermore, instructors should include comprehensive study guides that include pictures, diagrams, charts, and definitions.  Each section of the handout or study guide should match the logical order of the presentation following up with action plan to implement what to do as a result of finishing the section.

Visual + Asynchronous are proactive learners and typically self motivated because they must master a set of learning objectives on their own time while completing a set of tasks using a workbook, online course study, and self assessment.  Help the visual asynchronous learner by sharing your PowerPoint presentation (using SlideShare.net), handouts (using www.Box.net), and making video screen capture of your live class (using Camtasia) available for download or viewing on  your website.

If you have ever seen someone or yourself playing with your phone, fidgeting with your papers, or doodling with your pen in a class I’m willing to bet they are a Kinesthetic + Synchronous learner.  These people love to discuss key terms in groups, role playing, and sharing what they learn in class.  Help them by creating a learning environment of sharing key points with geographically convenient partners to which they come with their own solution as a result of discussing how the learning objectives apply to their own specific businesses.

Kinesthetic + Asynchronous are the most time consuming group to prepare for, analyze, and facilitate.  They love to do their own research given a specific set of learning objectives.  It is very easy for them to navigate  off topic depending on  their level of interest within one learning objective.  Educators must develop some sort of discussion board  where students are able to ask the instructors questions online and the instructor can post answers for all students to benefit.  The challenge for educators who adapt to asynchronous kinesthetic learning environments is that they can spend hours answering questions online as opposed to live classes the questions typically end after the class is over.
